Md Tn Ala Tx DNA Mystery - Part 3

In a PART 2 I had a head scratcher with 7 people who have intertwined DNA results,  believed to be through Willis.  As I started putting their info in a post,  new hints bubbled up that now leads me to believe that 3 of the 7 are more immediately related:
  • Charley of Vern, Emma of Betty, and George of Trish are of the same immediate family.
  • Their ancestors (Charley, Emma, and George) appear to be together in this 1870 census.
  • They are grandchildren of 60 year old Charles Willis of that census.
  • Charles is in this 1850 census, having a large group of older children.
  • Most of the older children have left by the 1860 census.
  • Double checking the transition from 1850 to 1860 to 1870 confirms this to be the same Charles, I think.  Ages,  places of birth, locations are somewhat inconsistent for passage of time from 1850 to 1860 to 1870.  Age from 46 to 54 to 60.  Birth from Alabama, Kentucky, Kentucky.  Location from Holmes Miss, Franklin Ala, Holmes Miss.  The primary constants from 1850 to 1860 is child Henry C.  And from 1860 to 1870 is birth place of Kentucky.  I believe all 3 to be the same Charles.  Others could legitimately question.
  • However,  note that a large number of people on the DNA match lists of Vern, Betty and Trish have ancestors who trace to the family of the 1850 Census of Charles.  See the list at the end of this post.  This supports the theory of the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census above to be of the same household.
  • This Charles appears in an 1820 Census of Monroe Co, Miss.
  • Monroe was formed in 1816 from Indian Lands.  So, the 1820 census was their first.
  • The only other Willis in that census is Henry.
  • Henry is older,  may be the father of Charles.
  • Both are indicated to be from Kentucky.
  • I believe Henry to be the son of Jarvis, born in Tenn,  moved to Kentucky briefly, then to Miss.
  • Need to research Monroe and Holmes County, Miss for Willis.
The other observation I am making is that Vern, Betty and Trish are DNA matching to tons of people of the Jarvis 1758-1850 lineage.  I believe that their Charles traces back thru Jarvis.  Right now,  Vern has his lineage going back to Isaiah of Ga,  but is not getting DNA Circles confirmation. And there is a lack of DNA matches to other people with Ga. Willis in their trees in Vern's match list. So,  his lineage might be in question. It is very likely that Vern's path goes thru Alabama, Mississippi and not Ga.

In combined efforts of our Willis family research,  we have never identified one of the sons of Jarvis.  I believe that son to be the Henry above.  That would explain why Vern, Betty and Trish are matching so very many people with Jarvis lineage.  Note that many descendants of Jarvis wind up in Lawrence County, Alabama,  just over the state line from Monroe County, Miss. where Henry and Charles locate in 1820.

I am now combing through the match lists of Vern, Betty and Trish and contacting people with Willis lineage who I believe are of our Willis group.  Many dead end their trees well before Jarvis.  I am helping them extend their Willis branches.  Our goal is to see what DNA Circles and New Ancestor Discoveries may then result.

THE common thread I find in the match lists of Vern, Betty and Trish are matches to people with a path in their trees that will eventually take their Willis branch back thru Jarvis Willis 1758-1850Those I have contacted:

  • These take Vern, Betty, Trish's path thru the Charles of the 1850,60,70 Census:
  • law0513 goes thru Jasper, son of Charles of 1850 census, then dead end.  Then to Henry, then to Jarvis?
  • rita white - dead end on Jasper, son of Jasper, son of Charles of 1850 census.  Then to Henry, then to Jarvis?
  • sjac5763 - dead end on Lorenzo Dow, son of Charles of 1850 census.  Then to Henry, then to Jarvis?
  • swhorton99 - dead end on Hardee, son of Lorenzo Dow, son of Charles of 1850 census.  Then to Henry, then to Jarvis?
  • sltokars - Henry Caroll, then Charles of 1850 census, then has Henry of 1820 Monroe,  connected back to another Charles in Kentucky.  Instead, to Jarvis?
  • M.C. (admin estlack)- dead-end on Trish's George Washington Willis.
  • Also see EricWillis below.

  • These take paths that will eventually go thru Jarvis:
  • James Slife - dead end on Rufus, son of Charles, son of Jarvis.
  • jonthemusicfreak - dead end on William Hart, son of David Bennett, son of John, son of Jarvis.
  • doyaph - dead end on John Lewis, son of John, needs to go to Jarvis.
  • CS (admin davidstx) - Dolly, John Lewis, dead-end on John, needs to go to Jarvis.
  • rdhdawn09 - dead end on a younger John Lewis ,  likely somehow descended from elder John Lewis, son of John, son of Jarvis.  Willis is of maternal lineage. Ask if a male Willis relative could do a Y-DNA test. RESEARCH. (responded 3/31)

  • These take a path that may wind up going thru Jarvis:
  • PH (admin Yorky2901) - A Samuel Willis born 1851 in Alabama. First shows in Etowah County in 1880.  Need to find previous household.  Of McMinn migration? RESEARCH
  • Rhonda_Wilson75 - A Jefferson Willis married to Angeline Hardin, born Tn.  Of William in 1830 McMinn Census? RESEARCH Also matches CW 6.2 cM across 1 segment.
  • Russell Jackson - John Willis married to Mary Cagle. Not yet sure of connection.  RESEARCH
  • J Becker3223 - dead-end on Benjamin Abbott Willis.  1860 census indicates in household of William C Willis, born about 1793 in NC.  Son of William Jr 1740-1793?  This is an outlier in terms of Jarvis, but appears to be of our group. RESEARCH

  • On the match list, already with a path thru Jarvis:
  • Joni_Collopy  - Mary J, John, Jarvis
  • staceyobryan - John Lewis, John, Jarvis.

In addition, I sent a message to EricWillis as a result of his posting of info on Henry above of 1820 Monroe.   Addendum - Eric has a tree on Ancestry.  I am not yet sure if he has done DNA testing.  In his tree,  he has the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census above attached to his ancestor,  Charles Willis. He has no parents indicated for Charles.  I am trying to get in touch with him to inquire about the possibility of a Y-DNA test.  If he were to test,  this would 100% confirm whether Charles of the 1870 census is of our MARYLAND GROUP.

GOAL - Get these trees tracking at least up to JARVIS WILLIS.
